Default Pet size

There is a lot of old and conflicting information regarding the size of pets and how it is affected by level/evolution. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a definitive source on the matter.

Questions:
1) Is there a difference among the dire, elder, and hearty variants of a given animal type? Comparing screenshots suggests no, but maybe there is something I'm missing.
2) Does it matter whether an animal is tamed at level 5 and then leveled up, as opposed to acquiring a level 20 in the menagerie? Some players have claimed that the actual process of changing evolutions is what makes the pet grow.

Thanks for any verifications you can provide.

As far as i recall via observations - the size of the pet only increases at certain levels and as far as i know the evolution only affects its hp/dmg rather than size - ive had my dire black wolf out same time as a friends normal lvl 20 black wolf and theres no size diff.

The answers are no and no. There are some quirks involving animals charmed in the wild that have a specific evolution (such as the level 12 aggressive lioness), and these will not grow if they do not evolve again as they level. But all pets charmed at level 20 in the menagerie will be max size, no matter which evolution you select.

The Black Moa in the image is smaller than the others because it was charmed at max evolution and could not evolve further. There was originally a bug that did not permit Black Moas to grow like other pets even if re-charmed from the menagerie. That was fixed and it is now the same size as the others after being re-charmed at level 20 from the menagerie.

Of the other three, one is dire and the other two are hearty, but you can't tell which is which by size. One of the regular moas was charmed in Pre-Searing while the other was charmed at level 20 from the menagerie, but you can't tell which is which by size.

(The White Moa is the dire one. The moa beside Jin was charmed in the menagerie at level 20.)

Thank you; this is precisely what I was looking for. Very appreciated.
